Despite Tottenham loss against Aston Villa yesterday at the White Hart Lane, Spurs made a Premier League history no one other team has ever done.
Tottenham Hotspur broke an unwanted Premier League record with Sunday afternoon’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
Ange Postecoglou’s side slipped to fifth in the table and out of the Champions League places.
Spurs took the lead in the first half through Giovani Lo Celso and managed to dominate with a makeshift XI, which included Emerson Royal at centre-back.
They failed to make it count and Villa grabbed an equaliser thanks to Pau Torres before the break.
Ollie Watkins’ strike in the second half was enough to snatch all three points, despite Spurs captain Son Heung-min having a hat-trick of goals ruled out for offside.
Villa have now replaced Spurs in the top four as their season goes from strength to strength.
For Spurs, their promising start to life under Postecoglou feels like a distant memory.
They were unbeaten in their first ten games under the Australian coach, even managing to beat Manchester United and draw with bitter rivals Arsenal.
Spurs’ decline started against Chelsea earlier this month. James Maddison and Micky van de Ven went off injured in the first half, then Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were sent off in a 4-1 defeat.
Five days later, Wolverhampton Wanderers came from behind to win 2-1 at Molineux.
Spurs are also the first time in nine years to suffer three consecutive losses after taking the lead in all three games.
Despite the defeat, Postecoglou believes Spurs were ‘outstanding’ against Villa.
He told Sky Sports: “Tough outcome but I couldn’t be happier with the way the boys played – I’m really proud of them.
“I thought we played some fantastic football and on another day we’d have probably won the game comfortably.
“I can’t fault the effort, the intent and everything they put into the game.”
Things won’t get easier for Spurs. They take on reigning champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium next Sunday.
