Bryan Gil can be a strange player to watch for Tottenham.
The Spaniard is clearly a very talented footballer, but, at the same time, he’s lacking the physical ability required to be a star in the Premier League, and, as you can imagine, that lack of strength and speed has led to a lack of confidence as of late.
Gil may have struggled in England, but when he was first signed for Spurs, many thought he was going to be a star.
Speaking on The Tottenham Way Podcast, Tom Allnutt has been discussing how scouts viewed Gil before he joined Spurs, and he says that some had him earmarked as the next Andres Iniesta due to his ability and the fact he’d performed at Eibar – a club said to be the Spanish equivalent of Burnley with their rough and ready style of play.
Scouts adore Gil
Allnutt shared what he’s heard about Gil.
“I was speaking to someone about this who knew Gil in Spain and he says it’s tough for scouts in the Premier League because you look at Spanish talents with technical ability, and you compare him to David Silva for example, he went on loan to Eibar which is kind of the Burnley equivalent in Spain, he played brilliantly there and everyone decided he had all the talent and Bryan Gil did the same,” Allnutt said.
“So the Premier League scouts were saying this is the David Silva lineage, he has the ability, combine it with the Eibar factor we have the next Andres Iniesta on our hands, that’s why Tottenham rolled the dice, they thought he was a young player who had everything, let’s go early and it was earlier than David Silva, but you can’t blame them for doing that,”
Needs to bulk up
It’s clear that Gil has the talent to make it at this level, and the fact that he performed well at Eibar shows he has the tenacity too, but he does need to bulk up if he’s going to be a star in England.
Even David Silva, who was always a very slight player, packed on a little bit of muscle mass during his time at City, and Gil needs to follow that example.
At the age of just 22, Gil has time on his side, and with scouts rating him so highly, perhaps he could still be a star of the future.
Gil remains a player worth keeping an eye on as he grows and develops.
