Daniel Levy must splash the cash on forward Lois Openda to replace Richarlison with the Brazilian enduring a miserable time since signing for Tottenham.
The Sunday People reported on page 55 of its print edition on 10 December that Spurs have been watching the Belgian international for RB Leipzig while 26-year-old Richarlison has been “struggling to deliver” goals in North London this season.
It revealed that Manchester United are also tracking Openda, 23, and had scouts watching him when he scored twice against Manchester City in the Champions League in November.
It’s becoming more obvious with every game that passes by that Tottenham are in desperate need of a new striker following the departure of Harry Kane over the summer.
While Spurs are still scoring goals under Ange Postecoglou, they do lack someone with that killer edge to find the back of the net in the key moments, with Richarlison missing a huge chance with his head in the 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Thursday (7 December).
The Brazilian international has scored just one Premier League goal in 12 appearances this season to go alongside the one he scored across the entirety of the last campaign.
The forward has missed five big chances this season after averaging two shots on target per game, with 0.6 of those efforts being on target for a conversation rate of just four per cent [SofaScore].
Despite making seven starts in the league, he has only averaged 26.5 touches, while his pass accuracy is down at 73 per cent, he’s created just one big chance and only completed 33 per cent of his dribbles successfully.
Those figures simply aren’t good enough for someone who wants to lead the line for a side chasing a place in the Champions League.
It doesn’t come as much of a surprise that Tottenham are, therefore, eyeing a move for Openda on the back of his performances for Leipzig this season.
The striker made his £35million move during the summer to the Bundesliga club from Lens, where he scored 21 goals in 38 Ligue 1 matches last season.
He has kept up that impressive scoring record in Germany during this campaign, having notched 10 goals in his opening 14 league matches as well as four strikes in the Champions League.
Of those goals, two have come with his head, while four have been with his left foot and eight have been with his right, making him an all-rounded forward.
The Belgian has registered 3.9 shots per game in the league, with 1.8 of those being on target for a conversion rate of 19 per cent.
He has created five big chances as he averages 1.1 key passes per outing despite his pass success rate being down at 66 per cent.
It’s quite clear that the confidence levels between Openda and Richarlison are at completely opposite ends of the scale at the moment.
If Levy wants to hand Postecoglou a proven goalscorer to get Spurs back into Europe this season, then he must pull the trigger and sign the Leipzig man in January.
