Following the news about Cristian Romero’s injury, Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez in the January transfer window.

The North Londoners are expected to be active in the market next month. They need reinforcements at the back, and Gomez has emerged as a surprise target for Ange Postecoglou‘s side.

Tottenham want to sign Joe Gomez from Liverpool

Tottenham were dealt a huge blow yesterday after it was confirmed that Cristian Romero has suffered an injury and will be out of action for over a month.

The Argentine is their best defender. Yes, he is reckless at times, but Tottenham’s chances of winning games are much higher when he is in the side.

What makes it worse for Tottenham is that Micky van de Ven is still injured, which means Ange Postecoglou, who clearly doesn’t fancy Eric Dier, will have to go with a central defensive partnership of Ben Davies and Emerson Royal against Brighton tonight.

Tottenham need reinforcements at the back, and The Daily Mail claim now that Spurs are interested in signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez in the January transfer window.

The Englishman is by no means the first-choice under Jurgen Klopp, but he is still a very important part of their squad due to Liverpool‘s injuries.

The Reds are unlikely to consider any offers for him in January, but the report claims that Tottenham are very much interested in the versatile defender.

Jurgen Klopp thinks Joe Gomez has ‘outstanding speed’

Joe Gomez’s stock has fallen over the last couple of years, but the Englishman is still a very good defender, and his versatility makes him a really attractive option.

Jurgen Klopp is a huge fan of Gomez. He has stuck with him during his difficult moments and has raved about him on numerous occasions.

Back in January 2020, Klopp said about Gomez, as per Liverpool’s official website: “Joe jumped between right-back and centre-half, which is not perfect when you have no rhythm. If you are in a good moment it’s no problem, but in that moment Joe had no real rhythm and that’s why he struggled a little bit.

“But since he is playing as a centre-half again – his natural position – together with Virg there is exceptional. He is a sensational footballer, which is good.

“He has outstanding speed, which helps us a lot to keep our last line high; he is a really good challenger; good in one-on-one situations; football-wise, I said already, good. The package is really nice. It was always clear in the moment he starts playing and can get rhythm again, everything will be fine – and that’s how it is.”
