“Him impact made me forget James Maddison already”: Gary Lineker says 22-year-old Tottenham player’s passing has been exceptional so far and joking says he has filled James Maddison’s void.
Gary Lineker has named the Tottenham Hotspur player whose passing was exceptional during their draw with Manchester United on Sunday.
Spurs were excellent at Old Trafford, coming from behind on two occasions to earn a point. It was an impressive showing, with Ange Postecoglou unable to call upon the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Son Heung-min for various reasons.
But they certainly had players who could still produce real quality. And Pedro Porro was at the heart of so much that Tottenham did well against Erik ten Hag’s side.
Gary Lineker lauds Pedro Porro after Tottenham draw
It was the Spaniard who set up Richarlison for Tottenham’s first goal. In all, Porro made five key passes, according to Whoscored. That is one fewer than the entire Manchester United squad managed between them in the draw.
And speaking on The Rest Is Football, Gary Lineker suggested that he was blown away by how good the 24-year-old was on the ball in the game.
“I thought Porro was exceptional. His passing, his crossing, his set plays – every corner, and they had a lot of corners and free-kicks – and he was hitting the right spot almost every time,” he said.
“I was watching the game with three of my boys and we were saying it’s just a brave way to play and such an enjoyable way to play that you can see what he wants to do.”
Spurs may have their own Trent Alexander-Arnold
Tottenham appear to have their very own Trent Alexander-Arnold in the former Sporting man. Porro came in for criticism over his defensive ability during the draw.
But there is absolutely no disputing how good he is in possession. He now has eight assists in the Premier League this season. That puts him alongside Mohamed Salah and Ollie Watkins at the top of the charts in this campaign.
Ange Postecoglou will surely be willing to look past Porro’s potential limitations defensively because of the quality he provides in the final third.
Certainly, there are not too many full-backs in the division who are capable of providing the same service as the Tottenham man.
