Wolves are extremely excited about midfielder Joao Gomes – which is why any £30 million bid from Tottenham Hotspur would be laughable.
It has been suggested in recent days that Spurs have an interest in the Brazilian dynamo, who is into his first full season at Molineux, after joining the club from Flamengo a year ago.
Gomes has been in really good form this season, replacing Ruben Neves in midfield, and his performances in the last few games have been especially good.
Alongside Mario Lemina in the engine room, Gomes has been a breath of fresh air, snapping into tackles and running his socks off for the team.
It’s a pleasure to watch him in old gold and it is no surprise that there is now word of interest in him.
But Spurs are going to have to do much, much better than a reported £30 million bid to sign the South American…
Tottenham should not waste their time bidding £30m for Joao Gomes – he’s worth at least double that
It has been claimed that Spurs are preparing a £30 million bid for Gomes to test Wolves’ resolve, and this morning it’s been reported by Gávea News that Spurs intend to make ‘a substantial proposal’.
If it’s true that Spurs want to offer somewhere in the region of £30 million for Gomes, then that is truly laughable.
Such a derisory offer would be rejected out of hand.
At the moment, Wolves are still having to be a little bit mindful of their financial situation, having sold a number of players in the summer. But right now, Wolves are not under pressure to sell players having balanced the books.
Therefore, Wolves can demand high prices for their players – and that is exactly what they should do with Gomes, who is a young star with serious potential.
Gomes has only been in England for one year, and has already proven himself as an amazing ball-winner with a fantastic engine. Against Brentford in the Premier League in December, Gomes stunned by making 10 successful tackles – the highest number by a player in a league game this season.
Gomes is only 22 years old and is already performing at a very high level. He’s at least five years away from the start of his peak and so, £30 million is just not going to cut it.
Wolves were reported last year to be seriously excited about Gomes’ potential and also Boubacar Traore’s. The club would surely not be so foolish as to try and make a quick buck on the 22-year-old.
Matheus Nunes fee should be the benchmark
So if Gomes is worth more than £30 million, then what kind of figure would we be talking about?
Realistically, you’ve got to look at the £53 million fee Manchester City paid for Matheus Nunes last summer.
That was £53 million for a player who was at Wolves for just over a year and delivered only a handful of great performances.
Gomes – described as ‘a super talent’ by Gary O’Neil – has done much more in a Wolves shirt than he did. Granted, he is younger and signed for Wolves for a lot less money than Nunes, but Gomes has arguably made a greater impact in English football than Nunes and that has to be reflected in his asking price.
You then have to take into consideration the contract Gomes is tied to at Wolves – the star’s deal expires in the summer of 2028, and there is also an option for the club to extend it by a further 12 months (Wolves official). That puts Wolves in a very strong position.
Ultimately, Wolves don’t want to sell and they also don’t have to. Therefore, Gomes is worth much more than £30 million to the club right now.
