Paul Merson was left baffled by what he was hearing about Tottenham Hotspur duo James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur.

The Tottenham midfield pair were put in the same breath as Manchester City’s Treble-winning duo Rodri and Kevin de Bruyne recently.

But the outspoken Paul Merson was having none of it, as he stated that the Tottenham stars aren’t near the Premier League title winners, as he posted on Twitter.

There is no doubt that James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur are huge players for Ange Postecoglou.

And if they can stay fit, from now until the end of the season, then it seriously increases the club’s chances of securing Champions League football for next season.

As of this moment, Spurs are sitting fifth in the table and they are three points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Nonetheless, this was the pretty blunt message Paul Merson had for a Spurs fan who decided to compare Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison to Rodri and Kevin de Bruyne.

James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur

“Take your Tottenham glasses off and please do not put Bentancur and Maddison in the same breath as De Bruyne and Rodri…. I’m big fans of Bentancur and Maddison but not near the other 2,” wrote Merson.

James Maddison return

Well, there is every chance that all four players mentioned will be in action on Friday night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Postecoglou will welcome Man City for the fourth round of the FA Cup, after the duo recorded a 3-3 draw at the Etihad in December.

The great news for Spurs is that Maddison, after a few months out, could make his return to the squad which is a massive boost to the team.

Whilst de Bruyne, after his stunning cameo at St James’ Park, could earn his first start in a long while.
