NEWS IN – Liverpool sent clear message to Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou amid Jurgen Klopp’s sudden retirement claims [CHECK FULL STORY LINK IN COMMENT]
Ange Postecoglou has so far worked miracles at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and some Spurs supporters may be anxious about what may happen next now Jurgen Klopp is leaving Liverpool
The message from Tottenham to Liverpool is clear – hands off Ange Postecoglou. There may not be links to the Australian, he may be far from the Reds owners’ thoughts when it comes to replacing Jurgen Klopp, but in the interests of transparency, you can’t have him, even if you were to come sniffing.
Klopp dropped a bombshell on Friday morning when he announced his decision to step down as Liverpool head coach at the end of the Premier League season. He will bring to an end a nine-year tenure at Anfield and brings the curtain down on a hugely successful spell for the Reds.
Before he goes, he has the small matter of a second Premier League title to win, with the Reds currently five points clear of the chasing pack at the top of the table. But, with his decision seemingly made in November, FSG have already had plenty of time to eye up potential successors.
Eyes will almost certainly look immediately to former Reds player Xabi Alonso – working wonders in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen. Roberto De Zerbi is another who gets linked with any big job when it comes up as he has received plaudits throughout his time at Brighton & Hove Albion for the way his team play football.
Steven Gerrard will undoubtedly be linked, given his status as a Liverpool legend, although he has failed to pull up trees in his managerial career so far. Postecoglou’s name is sure to crop up too, after his trophy-laden spell with Celtic and his start to life as head coach at Tottenham this season.
Not to mention he has already admitted he was a Liverpool fan as a child! Postecoglou has started a project in N17, however, and would surely not be tempted to turn his back on it so soon.
He has a rebuild on his hands at Spurs, with the club in dire need of new drive and direction at the start of this season, following years of turgid football under the likes of Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte. The rebuild has already begun and Spurs started the season like a house on fire, unbeaten in their opening ten games.
Injury and unavailability saw that form stutter, but with Spurs in fifth in the league, there is still everything to play for under the Australian.
The likelihood were he to leave for Liverpool would be that he would have to start another rebuild. Players are sure to follow Klopp out of the exit door. The Tottenham rebuild is already under way and it is clear for all to see the impact he has had on everyone around the club.
Postecoglou has already admitted that he has “grown up” and that “things change”, and there is no doubting his commitment to Spurs right now. He is being given the tolls to succeed at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and that is sure to continue for the rest of this season and into next.
