Tony Cascarino has not held back in his criticism of Timo Werner, claiming that the Tottenham Hotspur loanee looks to be worse than he was at Chelsea.
Timo Werner has made a quiet start to life at Spurs following his surprise move to North London in the January transfer window.
Werner has provided a couple of assists. But he is yet to open his own account. And with Heung-min Son now back from international duty, the German is perhaps now on the brink of losing his spot in the starting lineup.

Werner has been praised by Ange Postecoglou. However, it appears that not everyone has been won over by the 27-year-old, who arrived with something of a point to prove after a difficult time with Chelsea.
Signing Werner appeared to be a low-risk move for Tottenham given that he is only on loan. Spurs have the option to make his deal permanent for £15 million in the summer.
Judging by his comments on talkSPORT, Tony Cascarino does not believe that Tottenham need to think too long about whether to keep Werner beyond this season.
“I want to talk about one player in particular. And now, Tottenham have won the game. He made some substitutions. Heung-min Son came on for Timo Werner. Timo Werner now has played five games. It’s a short period. Is he any different from the player I saw at Chelsea? Slightly. He’s worse,” he said.
“Honestly, he’s so predictable. He gets on the ball, he sticks on the wing and he’s staying there and he’s waiting for the ball. I’d love to know what Tottenham’s fans think because he’s really gone unmentioned about how poor he’s been in those five games.
“And there are moments you get with Timo Werner because he’s quick, and he’s blisteringly quick. But he’s sticking to the wing, it’s like he’s in a hiding place. You could say well the coach is making him stretch the pitch, make it as big as you can. But he’s having no impact at all. He’s literally on the fringe of a game, Timo Werner.”
Comments seem a little harsh right now
It does feel like an unfair criticism of Werner. He had not played regularly for RB Leipzig in the months before his move. And Tottenham would not have been able to sign him on loan had he been anyway.
Ultimately, Tottenham’s biggest dilemma comes if Werner scores four or five goals while he is at the club. Because then you could hardly say that he has set the world alight, but he has definitely not been a flop either.
It is certainly too soon to write Werner off. But it probably is fair to say that Werner is yet to showcase why Tottenham made the move in January.
