Stanis Idumbo Muzambo was reportedly offered a contract by Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur but now explains that he felt a move to Sevilla was ‘simply better for me’.
After losing their way over the last few seasons, Sevilla appear to be re-embracing the approach which brought them such success, particularly during the glorious, silver-coated days of Monchi and Unai Emery.
The perennial Europa League winners signed four players under the age of 22 during the January transfer window. Lucien Agouma joined from Inter Milan, arriving alongside Manchester United duo Mateo Mejia and Hannibal Mejbri.
Stanis Idumbo Muzambo, a France-born 18-year-old who represents Belgium at youth level, could yet prove to be the most inspired acquisition of the lot. Especially if he begins showcasing the ‘creative and spectacular’ talents which made the teenager such a hit in the prodigious Ajax academy.
Tottenham missed out on former Ajax kid
According to La Derniere Heure, Tottenham Hotspur offered Idumbo a four-year deal in North London ahead of the January transfer window. Now, speaking to that very same publication, the jet-heeled forward has explained his reasoning behind joining Sevilla instead.
“The project here was simply better for me,” Idumbo argues. “I think I made the right choice to come here to grow.”
Idumbo is currently representing Sevilla’s reserve team in the fourth tier of Spanish football. He remains confident that a first-team bow will arrive sooner rather than later, however, feeling that Sevilla can offer opportunities that may have been beyond him at a Tottenham side boasting a litany of talent in the wide areas.
Heung-Min Son, Richarlison, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner, Dejan Kulusevski and Manor Solomon are all capable of playing on the wing, and that is without mentioning the seldom-seen former Sevilla ace Bryan Gil.
“I will make my debut with the first team soon,” Idumbo adds. “That’s why I came here. I believe I can become a better footballer in Spain.”
Alejo Veliz hoping to impress in La Liga
Tottenham have certainly enjoyed more hits than misses of late when attempting to lure some of Europe’s brightest young talent to North London. Spurs fought off competition from a number of continental giants for Luka Vuskovic, Radu Dragusin, Destiny Udogie and Lucas Bergvall.
HITC Football understands that Tottenham now hope to do the same with Copenhagen’s £20 million-rated forward Roony Bardghji.
Interestingly, the Spurs-owned striker Alejo Veliz has joined Idumbo at Sevilla. The Argentine striker is on loan in Andalusia until the summer.
