“I want to play for Tottenham “: On-loan £20m rated Spurs player sends message to Ange Postecoglou [Full story link in comment]
Tottenham Hotspur paid big money to Middlesbrough for Djed Spence, but we have not seen him at his best at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Djed Spence was a key player for Nottingham Forest when they won promotion from the Championship to the Premier League in 2022.
That prompted Tottenham Hotspur to pay Middlesbrough £20 million in transfer fees to sign Spence (BBC Sport). The right-back was on loan at Forest from Boro in the 2021-22 season.
Spence has failed to make a huge impact at Tottenham. After loan spells at Rennes and Leeds United, the 23-year-old is now on loan at Genoa in Italy.
According to The Athletic, Genoa have the option to make the loan deal permanent for £8.5 million in the summer transfer window, but Spence wants to play for Spurs in the long term and has praised Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou.
Djed Spence wants to make a name for himself at Tottenham Hotspur
Spence told The Athletic: “I want to play for Tottenham. I want to be a big part of the plan but we’ve got to see how things go, have a discussion with the manager and everyone.
“It’s a big difference with the new manager, I did pre-season with him — he’s a good guy, he has good training sessions, he likes to play football, it’s a new environment at the club. I think everyone’s enjoying it and doing well, I’m pleased for them.”
The defender added: “I don’t think the Tottenham fans know me as a player. They’ve probably seen me from Forest days but I haven’t played so they don’t know what I’m capable of.
“The best is yet to come. Wherever I’ll be, I can hit the ground running and show everyone what I’m capable of doing.”
My View: No future at Tottenham Hotspur for Djed Spence
In my opinion, Djed Spence does not have a future at Tottenham Hotspur. I think that the 23-year-old right-back should leave Spurs for good in the summer transfer window.
Spence was on loan at Leeds United for the first half of the season and is now on loan at Genoa. Pedro Porro is the first-choice right-back at Spurs at the moment. He is 24.
If Ange Postecoglou really rated Spence and thought that he was good enough to play for his Tottenham team, then the former Celtic manager would not have sent him out on loan.
I think that Spence needs to forget about playing for Tottenham again and focus on his career away from the North London club.
