Emerson Royal has joked that Tottenham team-mate Yves Bissouma would be ‘arrested’ if he spent time in Brazil. The defender was asked which of his Spurs colleagues behaved the most ‘Brazilian’ and revealed that Bissouma enjoys the country’s culture.

Royal and Bissouma have developed a close friendship over the last couple of years. The pair have contributed positively to a successful season under manager Ange Postecoglou.

Brazilian YouTuber Fred interviewed Royal and Spurs team-mate Richarlison on his channel Desimpedidos. He asked the duo which of their colleagues had the most Brazilian personality.

Royal laughed and immediately responded: “Bissouma. He’s all Brazilian. He likes our stuff. Everything we have, both the good and the bad he likes. Likes to go out, likes everything. He’s different.”

However, the former Barcelona star jokingly added that Bissouma would not survive a trip to Brazil without being arrested. He claims that the ex-Brighton midfielder would ‘mess things up a lot’.

Royal added: “I wouldn’t take him to Brazil. He’ll get arrested there, and it will be my fault! He would mess things up a lot.”

In a wide-ranging chat about their team-mates, Royal and Richarlison opened up on the leadership qualities of Son Heung-min. Son was given the captaincy following the summer departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

Richarlison revealed that Son and Kane have different styles of leadership. Royal added that the striker has attempted to learn Portuguese and Spanish to help communicate with every player.

Richarlison said: “He guides yes, not as much as Harry Kane but he talks quite a bit. Of course, he has a big responsibility too because he’s been with Tottenham for many years. So he’s also the guy who has to take on responsibility with us.”

Royal continued: “Man tries to speak Portuguese, tries to speak Spanish. I say that he is very similar to us Brazilians, like his self-esteem, his way of living life. He’s a buddy. I really like him. Now he’s our captain. So now that he’s even more, he took on that responsibility even more.”

Spurs boosted their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League by beating Aston Villa 4-0 on Sunday. Villa, who were reduced to 10 men in the second half, remain fourth but are only two points ahead of the north Londoners – who have a game in hand.

Striker Richarlison has been key to Spurs’ positive year under Postecoglou, scoring 10 goals in 22 Premier League appearances. Royal has appeared less frequently, starting only nine top-flight matches.
