After Tottenham produced their best performance of the season at Villa Park last week, they went in the opposition direction against Fulham on Saturday.
Ange Postecoglou can’t have many complaints because from minute one his team just weren’t at it and they were outplayed by Marco Silva’s men.
The defence was being exposed too much, the midfield couldn’t control the match, the fullbacks were in no-man’s land and that affected the forward players.
Owen Hargreaves was critical of James Maddison and how he was ‘careless with the ball’ for Tottenham, as he told Premier League Productions (18/03/24 at 5:20 pm).
The former Bayern Munich star feels the 27-year-old needs to be playing higher up the pitch in his natural number 10 position where he can be ‘one of the best in the Premier League’.
Whilst he doesn’t mind the playmaker dropping deep, as he does when opposition teams defend deep.
The issue then is that he isn’t in the danger areas and more emphasis is put on him keeping hold of that ball, which he simply wasn’t doing at Craven Cottage.

“He was a little bit careless with the ball, I would say, James Madison,” said Hargreaves.
“On his day, he is brilliant – Bissouma gets the most touches and the most passes, so Bissouma is the one who gets Maddison the ball. It’s such a super important thing actually Pereira taking away Bissouma.
“James Maddison is waiting for Bissouma to get on the half-turn and then he is going to play him in – they (Fulham) would have had an eye on Maddison. This is what happens when you take away somebody’s space.
“I don’t mind him playing there for Tottenham (deeper in his own half). But when he plays there, he has to play with a little bit more care – you want to see him in his natural number 10 position, where I do think he is one of the best in the Premier League.”
Luton will defend deep
After the international break, the real and proper run-in will start for teams fighting for the big prizes.
All eyes will be on the Premier League title race, but there is something bubbling when it comes to the fight for Champions League football also.
Those were valuable points dropped by Spurs and they will have to put things right against Luton Town.
