JUST IN – Eberechi Eze fuelled social media fire after recent developments amid Tottenham transfer links [Full story link in comment]
Ebere Eze fuelled the media fire by conversing with James Maddison and Son Heung-min following Crystal Palace’s defeat at Tottenham on 2 March, according to Paul Robinson.
The Eagle’s attacking midfielder scored a brilliant free-kick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during the game but the Spurs-linked midfielder got tongues wagging after the fixture.
Eze, 25, was seen talking to Spurs captain Son behind their hands before Maddison came over to join in, then giving his fellow England international a warm pat on the back (Football London, 3 March).
Some have suggested that there may have been an element of Son and Maddison talking up a summer move to Eze, who has been linked with both Spurs and Manchester City in recent weeks.
Former Spurs goalkeeper Robinson – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks in reality there was probably nothing in the exchange but acknowledged it is the sort of thing the media loves to pounce on.
“The likelihood of Eze leaving Palace is high, whether he moves to Tottenham or not is another thing. I think he’d be a great addition to the Tottenham side and would improve the players we’ve got in that area,” Robinson said.
“But I just think there’s a lot of speculations that are made just because you’re seen with a mate out or at a Tottenham game or whatever it is, the fact is it was at a Tottenham game and they were quite comfortable where they were but it’s great fuel for the media fire isn’t it? I mean the media love stuff like that and jumping all over it.
“People forget that London – yes it’s a huge place – but there’s certain areas where players live and players socialise and you are allowed friends outside of football, inside of football players socialise.
“Does that have a bearing on where a player chooses? yeah, it does sometimes if you’ve got a good network of friends there and they’re able to sell it to you, explain it’s a great set-up, the manager’s brilliant etc. and if there’s an opportunity they may choose that ahead of anywhere else.
“The connections to Tottenham, are they real? Are they there? From a player’s network point of view with Maddison and others yeah there are clearly friends there.
“But actually, one is there an interest from Tottenham? You don’t know but you would think so. Tottenham are going to be in a race with a lot of people if and when he becomes available but I think that’s a two and two together from the media, I think that’s a situation and a couple of photographs that people have jumped on and presume Eze is going to sign for Tottenham.”
Did Ebere Eze and James Maddison gesture at Tottenham mean anything?
Look, there is a lot of speculation around right now so when Eze was seen warmly chatting with Maddison and Son of course there is going to be talk.
But, isn’t it also true that this sort of thing happens after most games? Eze and Maddison both want to play a part for England at Euro 2024, there’s every chance that was a topic of discussion too.
Of course it would be brilliant it Tottenham managed to snare a player of Eze’s quality this summer, no one is doubting that.
The chances that him talking to fellow professionals after a game is an indicator he is definitely signing for Tottenham seem pretty slim, though.
