Djed Spence, Bryan Gil, Hojbjerg and 13 other fringe Tottenham players that will be shipped out to fund summer transfer spree [Check comment for full story link]
Ange Postecoglou is looking to continue the transformation of his Tottenham Hotspur squad this summer and that will require plenty of departures.
The Australian is still trying to create a Spurs squad that can handle his brand of football and compete at the top of the Premier League table as well as in European competition for the seasons to come and he has already acknowledged that the busy nature of the club’s two previous transfer windows will carry on this summer.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do still on the squad and I don’t think we’re anywhere near where we want to be. It probably will take a little bit more than three windows to get there, for sure,” Postecoglou said this month. “Just in terms of the robustness, adaptability and compatibility of the squad, I think there’s still a fair bit of change we need to do.
“I certainly don’t think we’re one or two players away from getting to where I want us to be, nowhere near it. Some of that will be natural evolution. Some of it hopefully means we continue to get the improvement we’ve had this year from some of our players. If that happens over the next 12 months, then yeah we’ll be in a great position.
“But you’ve got to remember, a lot of our group are in their first year of the Premier League. A good chunk of them have been ever-presents, we need them to keep improving at the rate they are. We’ve still got a lot of work to do with the squad. I think we’re a long way away from being one or two players away from getting where we want to.”
On how many new players will come through the doors this summer, he added: “A little bit of that depends on availability of players, suitability of players. There could be more activity, there could be less activity, but again, what we want to do is make sure we bring in the right ones. Maybe we do only bring in one or two, I don’t know, but that will only be because we think there are only one or two that are suitable for what we’re looking for, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be where I want us to be”
New signings naturally mean players heading out of the door and Spurs have a huge squad when all of the players loaned out return, not including the likes of Eric Dier and Ivan Perisic who have already agreed exits at the end of their contracts this summer.
With the loaned out players in mind and those in the first team who need to leave for regular football, here are 11 players who could head off this summer either permanently or on loan to add to the transfer budget. There are always unexpected bids that come in for other players, but we think these are the most likely first teamers to leave before the next window closes.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
The Dane has started just six Premier League games this season even if he has still made a decent contribution, making 30 appearances during this campaign. There has been interest in Hojbjerg across Europe at clubs in Italy, Spain and Germany but nobody made a compelling enough offer in the January transfer window.
The 28-year-old will have just a year left on his contract this summer and Tottenham will look to at least recoup the fee they paid for him from Southampton, which included Kyle Walker-Peters in the deal back in 2020.
Bryan Gil
It just hasn’t worked for the 23-year-old at Tottenham and despite his abilities with the ball, he’s been one of Fabio Paratici’s few transfer failings as a string of managers have overlooked the young Spaniard each week.
Postecoglou gave him a couple of Premier League starts this season when Spurs had an injury crisis but after that cleared up and Gil turned down a loan move to Brighton, the diminutive dribbler has only had four minutes of action since and hasn’t even made the matchday squad in most of the games since then.
Gil is well regarded back in Spain and with a couple of years left on his contract, the north London club should get a reasonable fee, even if it might have to come after a loan with an option or obligation to buy.
Oliver Skipp
Another 23-year-old struggling for game time at Spurs and Skipp hasn’t played a single minute of football in almost two months. The midfielder needs to play elsewhere next season to get his previously promising career back on track, even if it’s simply a loan move for the next campaign.
Tottenham’s lack of homegrown club-trained players in UEFA’s eyes for European competition, with Harry Kane, Harry Winks and potentially Japhet Tanganga all moving on, could play their part in scuppering such a move and make it very problematic for Spurs to let him go, but it depends if Skipp pushes to leave this summer. He needs to play football and as a number six rather than being crowbarred into a number eight role that doesn’t really suit him.
With three years left on his contract, Spurs must either sell him for the FFP profit or loan him out and take a look at him again after a season playing elsewhere in the Premier League. Skipp was named as a future Tottenham captain by Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte felt similar but he does not seem to have a natural place under Postecoglou.
Keep an eye on those homegrown and club trained issues though and how it impacts which players the Australian must keep in his squad.
Djed Spence
Another one for the 23-year-old crew, Postecoglou soon agreed with Conte that Spence wasn’t right for his squad and after a prematurely-ended loan at Leeds United, the right-back was sent to Genoa as part of the Radu Dragusin deal.
So far that move to Serie A has been working out well on the whole, with four starts and three substitute appearances in nine matches and Spence earned plaudits for his performance in keeping Juventus out before the international break.
Also having three years left on his deal, Tottenham might just be able to make their money back this summer if the young full-back continues to reignite his career and spark interest either in Italy or back home.
Joe Rodon
Rodon could potentially be a real money maker for Spurs in this coming window as he’s been having by far the best season of anyone on this list.
The 26-year-old has starred in central defence for Championship table-toppers Leeds United and played almost every minute for a team with the best defensive record in the league. Leeds will regret not negotiating an option to buy the Wales international as part of his loan move because Tottenham could have a bit of an auction on their hands for the in-form defender this summer.
Staying with Leeds and their Welsh contingent, with fans that love him there, would seem the most straight forward move for the player but Daniel Farke’s side would have to stump up the money for Rodon. He will only have a year left on his deal but the defender will also be a man in demand.
Tanguy Ndombele
A man likely to be less in demand. As with each summer transfer window, the question will once again arise. Who wants to take Ndombele off of Tottenham’s hands?
The 27-year-old has done Spurs and himself no favours this season with an abject loan spell at Galatasaray, with just four starts to his name in the Turkish Super Lig, to go with his eight in Serie A last season for Napoli.
Once Tottenham’s record signing, the north London outfit might struggle to get anything for him this summer and with a year left on his deal, they might just have to take anything they can get for the Frenchman or simply cut their losses for a player Postecoglou, like those before him, could not find a place for in his system.
Ryan Sessegnon
Yet another 23-year-old, Sessegnon has lost a year of his career to hamstring problems and surgeries on each leg that bring with them the hope of finally closing this nightmare injury-ravaged chapter of his playing days.
The left-back will miss the rest of this season before Postecoglou has another look at him in pre-season but the likelihood is that, as was the case last summer before his setback, a move away will be on the menu with just a year left on his contract unless Tottenham hold an option to extend it.

Sergio Reguilon
Spurs need Reguilon to increase his value with a strong end to the season at Brentford, after a mixed loan spell at Manchester United in the first half of the campaign.
The 27-year-old left-back has made 20 appearances this season, which is probably far more than he would have got at Tottenham had he stuck around as he suddenly realised he was not part of Postecoglou’s plans. The Spaniard is another player with a year left on his contract and a permanent exit beckons this summer.
Japhet Tanganga
A horrendous first half to the season with a knee injury and then no game time for Augsburg in Germany has given way to a really impressive loan move to Millwall where Tanganga has been a big part of their revitalisation under Neil Harris.
The 24-year-old is another Tottenham player on this list in the final year of his contract this summer and this time in the Championship should garner plenty of interest in his services this summer.
Alfie Whiteman or Brandon Austin
One of Tottenham’s 25-year-old back-up goalkeepers is likely to leave this summer. Austin’s contract currently ends this summer while Whiteman’s comes to an end in 2025, however it is Austin who has been the man on the bench to back-up Guglielmo Vicario with Fraser Forster out with a fractured foot and the club-trained issues at Tottenham might help him get a new deal.
Those club-trained registration issues mean Spurs will likely need to keep one of the two goalkeepers while the other needs to head off and really start playing regular first team football, as both have done on previous loan spells.
Emerson Royal or Ben Davies
Again this could be an either or situation and perhaps a surprise for some for both players proved important when called upon this season to fill in as centre-backs during the injury crisis.
The problem for both is that Postecoglou has admitted that he wants to bring in another centre-back, so that will limit opportunities there, and with neither entirely suiting his system as full-backs, he will likely want new players in those positions as well.
Both bring versatility so it would perhaps lighten the squad if both departed but one could well move on this summer. Emerson has been linked with a move to Spain and Saudi clubs in recent windows while the dependable Davies would not struggle to get a move if he wanted to move on this summer for more regular football after a decade at Tottenham.
