“He’s fast and more productive”: Tottenham now urged to shift interest from Raphinha and sign £43m rated winger who’s FASTER than Mbape [Full story link in comment]
Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with a move to sign Raphinha from Barcelona, but another winger is actually more likely to move to Spurs this summer.
Ange Postecoglou has worked wonders with his Tottenham team this season, but they still need a lot of help from the transfer market to go to the next level.
Spurs are expected to be very active in the upcoming summer transfer window, and they are likely to strengthen their attack. A new winger is high on their agenda.
Among all the names linked with a move to Tottenham is Raphinha, but another absolutely rapid wide player is said to be the likelier option.
Tottenham are more likely to sign Spanish winger than Raphinha
Tottenham have to be very smart in the summer transfer window.
Yes, fans will want the biggest players to come through the door, but not everybody can fit into Ange Postecoglou’s system and perform at their highest level.
The attackers Tottenham should target must be fast, direct and capable of scoring goals and providing assists on a consistent basis.
Raphinha ticks a few of those boxes, which is probably why he has been heavily linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
However, Dean Jones believes Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams is actually more likely to join Spurs than the Barcelona man.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I’m not very expectant over Raphinha, even though Tottenham are interested in him.
“They have a few like him on their list but I get the feeling he is on it more in hope than expectation. This is a serious talent. I know he has not set the world alight at Barcelona but he has been desperate to make that move work out and he’s still in the starting XI for Brazil so this is a player who retains high value in the market and Barca would deal with that accordingly if interested parties make contact.
“I have a feeling that if Spurs sign a player from La Liga it might be more likely they try for Nico Williams. He’s on the list too and actually might be a better fit at a better price.”
Three reasons why Nico Williams would be better than Raphinha for Tottenham
We’re not going to sit here and pretend that Raphinha is a bad player – he’s not. The Brazilian is a fantastic winger and the fact that he knows the Premier League makes him an attractive option.
However, we think Nico Williams would be much better for Tottenham.
Firstly, the Spaniard is absolutely rapid. He’s not just faster than Raphinha but also Kylian Mbappe, who is among the quickest forwards in the world. That would suit Ange Postecoglou’s system.
Secondly, Williams can be signed for just £43 million (ESPN). Raphinha, on the other hand, will cost a lot more, with reports revealing that Saudi side Al-Hilal are set to bid £86 million for him this summer.
Finally, Williams, 21, is six years younger than Raphinha. His ceiling is much higher than the Brazilian’s, and we feel he will explode under Ange Postecoglou if he joins Spurs.
