James Maddison was a big positive for Tottenham in the comeback victory over Luton Town which kept up the club’s push for a top-four finish.
The former Leicester City man turned in a strong overall performance as Ange Postecoglou’s side fought back from an early Tahith Chong strike to take the points with a 2-1 win, thanks to an Issa Kaboré own goal and a late Son Heung-min winner.
It was vital that Spurs bounced back from the miserable 3-0 loss at Fulham before the international break (16 March), and while the performance was far from perfect they got an important win at home on 30 March to keep pace with Aston Villa in the fight for Champions League qualification, and where they have previously been guilty of throwning points away they battled back to take all three.
According to stats from SofaScore the 27-year-old was efficient on the ball, completing 42 of his 46 passes (91%) including all three of his long balls and his one cross from 59 total touches.

Against his opposite numbers he also performed well, winning his one aerial duel and seven of his nine on the ground (77.8%), while making two tackles, blocking one shot and intercepting one pass.
The performance meant criticism from Richard Keys during the game paled into insignificance by the final whistle as Spurs were left celebrating the win.

Well, players are said to cut holes in their socks to relieve pressure on their calf muscles [Goal], but whether that is sufficient for Keys or not Tottenham fans are unlikely to care anywhere near as much as him what Maddison does with his socks if he puts in performances that keep putting points on the board.
So if the Qatar-based anchor’s irritation at the subject seemed unnecessary while Tottenham were losing it was ultimately made to look all the more ridiculous once a much-improved performance with the England midfielder prominent had brought them back to win.
Postecoglou will need to ensure the nature of the win, secured in the 86th minute, can provide a springboard to take them into Tuesday’s (2 April) London derby at West Ham.
