Tottenham: ‘Arrogant’ James Maddison verdict emerges after what happened v Nottingham Forest.
Bryan King believes Tottenham star James Maddison must continue to be “arrogant” on the ball without allowing that to spill over as it did against Nottingham Forest.
The ex-Spurs scout has suggested that Maddison must concentrate on his football and not allow himself to be dragged into needless fights with other players on the pitch as he did against Forest.
During the first half of Spurs’ 3-1 victory over the Reds on Sunday (6 April) the England international appeared to punch Ryan Yates in the stomach, with the Forest man calling for VAR to intervene.
King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes on another day Maddison might have been sent off.
“There was quite a bit of that throughout the game, and it appears to me as if teams are trying to wind Maddison up at the moment, and he is falling into the trap so this will only continue to happen.
“He just needs to concentrate on playing his football, he doesn’t need to respond to being fouled or targetted because it is often the retaliator who ends up being punished.
“Maddison is a good player, he is going to get tackled and players will be petulant toward him. He should have never got involved against Forest, and he was lucky that the referee didn’t take any further action.”
“I don’t mind it when he is arrogant on the ball, but once he starts retaliating against other players he lets Tottenham down.”

Maddison has been struggling for form as of late, and it appears as if that is beginning to frustrate the midfielder.
He has been involved in some confrontations since returning from injury, most notably his back and forth with Neal Maupay after Spurs’ 3-2 victory over Brentford (31 January).
Had Maddison been shown a straight red card against Forest for his altercation with Yates it would have left Ange Postecoglou without one of his key players for matches with Newcastle United, Arsenal and Chelsea.
Those are three games the England international absolutely cannot afford to miss, and with a tough run of fixtures to come for Tottenham as they look to quality for the UEFA Champions League, Maddison must ensure his head is in the right place.
