Tottenham: ‘Ludicrous’ Richarlison transfer admission emerges after what Alasdair Gold said [Full story link in comment]
John Wenham believes the sale of Richarlison should not be a priority at Tottenham this summer.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes a “ludicrous” sum of money would be required for Daniel Levy to consider the sale of Richarlison.
Richarlison has shown signs of improvement this season after initially struggling following his £60million switch from Everton (Sky Sports News, 1 July 2022).
However, despite scoring 10 Premier League goals for Spurs under Ange Postecoglou, it appears that his future in North London remains uncertain.
Speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast last month (18 March), Alasdair Gold had the following to say about Richarlison. He said: “I’m intrigued to see what happens with Richarlison this summer. All the indications seem to be that there could be another bid coming in from a Saudi club.
“Let’s say you get your money back, £60m, would you take it?”
Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes that the fee mentioned by Gold would not be enough.
“For Tottenham just to break even on Richarlison, they would need to fetch a fee of £60million, it is a ludicrous amount of money,” said Wenham.
“Richarlison should be right down there on the list of priorities when it comes to transfers.
“Spurs have so many players out on loan and a few still at the club who don’t contribute anything, and they need to be sold before a decision can be made on whether or not players who are still contributing should be sold.
“Richarlison is a player who contributes, he has been a key player this season and even to be offered £60million, that is just what Spurs paid for him, so they would probably want to see a higher offer from any of the Saudi clubs.”
Should Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou sanction the sale of Richarlison?
Only Son Heung-min has scored more goals than Richarlison for Tottenham this season.
That is despite the Brazil international having been in and out of the team in recent weeks with injury issues.
He clearly has quality and can offer Postecoglou a real option in his forward line, but if a fee of £60million or more was to come in from a Saudi club, that would surely be difficult to turn down.
Although it would only see Tottenham break even on what they paid for the 26-year-old, even breaking even seemed almost impossible after his first season at the club.
With the striker only getting older, and no guarantee that he will keep up this same form, Tottenham might be wise to cash in while they can on an expensive asset.
