John Wenham would like to see Emerson Royal sold as he doesn’t believe the Tottenham right-back is the right profile of player for Ange Postecoglou.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose would be keen for Spurs to let Emerson go if a reasonable fee were to arrive for the 25-year-old this summer.

Tottenham reportedly turned down a “huge” offer from Al-Nassr for the Brazillian during the January transfer window (via The Sun, 21 January).

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – feels that the club would be wise to accept any such offer this time around.

“If we could get close to the fee which we paid to sign Emerson, I would like to see us sell him.

“He is a good character to have around the squad and certainly a capable backup right-back.

“However, he isn’t suited to cover Pedro Porro in Postecoglou’s system, and I think if we could fetch a decent fee for him then letting him go would be the right move.”

Should Ange Postecoglou let Emerson Royal leave Tottenham amid reported Saudi interest?

Emerson has been with Spurs for almost three years now, joining the club from FC Barcelona for a reported fee of £25.8million (via BBC Sport, 31 August 2021).

After featuring regularly during his first couple of seasons at the club, the right-back has seen his minutes limited under Postecoglou, with Porro the Australian’s clear first-choice option in that position.

Letting Emerson go might therefore not be the worst idea, and with Saudi clubs seemingly circling, that could spell good news for Tottenham when it comes to recouping most of the £25.8million they paid to sign the defender in the first place.
