Pundit’s brutal response when asked if Ange Postecoglou was earlier over-rated left everyone SHOCKED [Full story link in comment]

Steve Nicol has responded to being asked whether Ange Postecoglou is overrated after Tottenham Hotspur were thrashed by Newcastle United on Saturday.

Spurs fans will surely be wary of making the trip to St James’ Park next season. Tyneside has not been a happy hunting ground for Tottenham over the last 12 months.

Tottenham have been so inconsistent in recent weeks. Ange Postecoglou‘s side have not won three games in a row since before Christmas. And they have won one of their six away games in 2024.

With that, it would be easy to forget that it was Tottenham who led the league in the early stages of the campaign.

Postecoglou was rightly receiving all kinds of plaudits after his appointment. Spurs were enjoying success with arguably the best brand of football in the division. Some have even tipped Postecoglou for Liverpool.

However, they have gradually fallen down the table, now sitting fifth. Teams have seemingly found a way to play against Spurs, limiting the impact of the likes of Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie.

Ange Postecoglou accused of being overrated after Tottenham loss

Postecoglou’s doubters will claim that he has been found out. But speaking on ESPN, Steve Nicol completely rejected the idea that the 58-year-old is overrated.

“Absolutely not. This is the best time to ask,” he said. “He’s come into the league, this is his first year in the league. And obviously, he wants to play the way he wants to play, and it’s attacking and all the rest of it. Eventually, he’s going to understand they have some sort of consistency at a certain level, you can’t do it unless you’ve got the right players. And when I say that, I’m talking about the Liverpool side that won the Premier League and the Champions League, who played this open, get after it [style]. They had a backline that wasn’t giving anything away. You couldn’t get out against them.

“So unfortunately, Spurs are never going to spend that amount of money to get in that position. So he’s going to have to understand that away from home, you can’t just open up and try and go toe to toe and out play not only the opposition, but 50 or 60,000 fans as well. No, he’s not overrated.

“He took over from two guys who won the Premier League, won the Champions League. And he’s actually put them to shame with the way that he’s turned the club around. So you absolutely cannot say that he’s overrated. Absolutely not.”

Spurs need to show signs of improvement next season

It has definitely been a successful season for Tottenham. Because of the start they made, it is easy to forget just what a mess they were in when Newcastle beat them last season.

They could be back in the Champions League next year. And that could open the door to Spurs taking that next step.

It will be interesting to see how this Tottenham side evolve and develop. Certainly, a lot more questions will be asked if they are suffering similar defeats at a similar stage of next season.
