Bournemouth’s in-demand defender Lloyd Kelly is leaning towards a move to Newcastle at the end of his contract this summer, according to reports.
Earlier this week, French outlet Foot Mercato claimed that verbal agreement had been reached between the defender and Eddie Howe’s side over the terms of a free transfer.
Although reports of a completed deal have been dampened down by the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, it is nonetheless acknowledged that left-sided Kelly remains on the Magpies’ list.
Capable of playing at left back or the left side of central defence, Kelly’s signing from Bristol City back in 2019 was overseen by Richard Hughes, the incoming Liverpool sporting director, who was then the south coast side’s Technical Director.
He cost Bournemouth around £13 million and has been a consistent performer – when fit – for the Cherries.
With his contract running, the 25-year-old was seen as an attractive option for a host of top clubs with Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Juventus and AC Milan all linked with his signature.
Although Spurs and Liverpool were previously reported to be in ‘advanced discussions’ for Kelly, it now appears Newcastle are in pole position.
And the reason why Kelly would favour a link-up with former Bournemouth manager Howe at St. James’ Park has now been revealed.
