On Tuesday City claimed a crucial 2-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to move to the Premier League summit, two points ahead of Arsenal with just one game against West Ham remaining.
The victory was crucial, given a draw would have kept Arsenal on top of the table – meaning the title would have been in their hands going into the final day.
Indeed, a draw looked like a possible scenario in the 86th minute when Manuel Akanji was robbed of possession inside his own half, allowing Son to race goalwards with only Stefan Ortega to beat.
But with the goal at his mercy Son’s shot was brilliantly saved by Ortega, with Erling Haaland doubling City’s lead from the spot just minutes later.
Spurs’ defeat confirmed Aston Villa’s place in next season’s Champions League in place of Ange Postecoglou’s side.
And after the game, Guardiola was spotted talking in Son’s ear in a typically animated fashion, with the pair each putting an arm around one another. The Spaniard appeared to be consoling a visibly disappointed Son, who was likely to have been ruing his missed opportunity.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher told the Gary Neville Podcast that Ortega’s save had almost certainly won City the title.
Carragher said: “[Tottenham] gave Man City more problems than I’ve probably seen anybody give them for a long time, in terms of the chances they created.
“Ortega, tonight alone, has won them the Premier League title. Obviously, a lot’s gone into that over the season but when you look at this game, if he doesn’t make those saves at 1-0, Arsenal will win the league. That’s how close it is.”
Carragher compared Ortega’s save to a long-range strike scored by then-City skipper Vincent Kompany that beat Leicester 1-0 and moved his side above Liverpool ahead of the final game of the season in 2019.
“When I think of me a few years ago as a Liverpool fan, watching Vincent Kompany put that shot in against Leicester, that is that moment now for Arsenal fans,” said Carragher.
“That Son chance is the moment Arsenal fans will remember in five, 10 years’ time. Even if they win the title in the next five years – and they’ve got a chance of doing that because they’re a great team with a great manager – that chance will still haunt them.”
