Eddie Howe has revealed that Newcastle United are targeting the ‘best players’ this summer – regardless of whether they have Premier League experience or not.
Nearly three-quarters of the first-team signings Howe has made at Newcastle have had prior stints in the English top-flight. These include experienced operators such as Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn as well as younger players with high ceilings like Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.
Newcastle are currently working on a deal for Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, who will be a free agent in the summer, and the 26-year-old has played in the Premier League in three of the last four seasons. At a time when both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are sidelined with serious knee injuries, the added advantage of a player like Adarabioyo is that the Englishman, obviously, already knows the league and country, which would make his adjustment period a little easier if a deal comes off.
However, interestingly, some of Newcastle’s biggest arrivals under Howe have come from the continent and around £193m has been spent on Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman, Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali. In fact, at least one major signing has arrived from overseas in the majority of Howe’s windows.
Given how long it has taken even some British players to adjust to Howe’s intense demands, clearly, previous Premier League experience is not a prerequisite this summer.
“I don’t think so,” Howe told reporters. “Just good players. The best players mixed together to form a team. That’s what we’re looking for. Wherever they come from is irrelevant to me.”

However, the Reds are aware that they would need to launch a hefty offer close to £100million to really test Newcastle’s resolve. The report adds that the Magpies are ‘expected to offload at least one, possibly two players’ in order to comply with Financial Fair Play rules.
