Paul Robinson believes Tottenham will suffer financially after missing out on Champions League qualification to Aston Villa this season.
Ange Postecoglou’s side were in the running to finish fourth in the Premier League, but a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday 14 May meant that Villa had secured the spot with one match remainin g.
Despite missing out on the top European competition, and now fighting for the Europa League, the former Spurs shot-stopper still believes it has been a positive campaign at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “It is a big blow. But when you look at the season as a whole, and where they were at the start of the season, my favourite phrase is ‘with success comes expectation’.
“If you take yourself back to the start of the season, and where Tottenham actually were, would a fifth-place finish and fighting for a Champions League spot for most of the season, be a good season?

If you’d have said to the fans that there would see a quick change in style, you’ll go 10 games unbeaten and sit at the top of the table, have a Champions League fight, and end up finishing fifth but it’ll be a rollercoaster of a season, after the bore that was watching under Mourinho and Conte, I think they would’ve taken a change in style.
“The problem this season has been the peaks and troughs. They’ve played really well at times and then lost a bunch of games, like the current run of results. They look to be finishing the season with a whimper.
If you sprinkle those results out through the course of the season, it’s not been a bad season, in fact, it’s been a really good season. But it does feel like a downer because they have missed out on the Champions League.
“Financially, it’s obviously going to hurt the club not qualifying for the Champions League. I don’t think that was ever the goal this season though, was it ?”
