The season has drawn to a close for Tottenham Hotspur and it’s a return to European football.
Based on last season, Spurs have made strides forward, although, Ange Postecoglou wouldn’t be sharing those same feelings.
This time last season, he was winning a Treble in the colours of Celtic, so it’s understandable if he feels a bit underwhelmed here.
After losing Harry Kane, for Tottenham to follow that up by improving 12 months later in nearly every department is pretty impressive.
Gary Neville recently called out Paul Merson for thinking otherwise because there has been a clear improvement and no one can argue about that.
But following Spurs’ 3-0 final-day win over Sheffield United that sealed fifth spot and a place in the Europa League, Ian Wright had a clear message for Daniel Levy.
The legendary striker was appearing on Match of the Day for one final time and he urged the club chairman to back the man in the dugout.
Wright pointed out that ‘they have a manager that wants to win’ and ‘they have had too many managers saying the same thing’.
Tottenham’s defeat to Manchester City and the story around it all created a lot of drama. It’s fair to say that Postecoglou doesn’t want to experience that again.

“I think him saying he has lofty ambitions for the club,” said Wright about Postecoglou. “Until he reaches that point, he won’t be smiling too much.
“They have a manager that wants to win. You are hoping now that Daniel Levy will back him because, the last couple of weeks have really opened his eyes. This manager needs backing now. He’s a winner. That’s what he needs now. They have had too many managers saying the same thing.”

You can’t argue that in Postecoglou’s debut transfer window, he was backed and the players he wanted were brought in.
Levy was even happy for senior stars to leave, such as Eric Dier in the January transfer window. He proceeded to join Bayern Munich.
It’s now a case of going again. Backing the manager and looking to take that next step.
Yes, the fans crave that all-important trophy. But returning to the Champions League would be the next logical step, before thinking of trophies and much higher ambitions. Manchester City have just won four titles in a row!
Depth is certainly needed for next season because Tottenham proved on many occasions this term that they need cover, especially at the back.
