Tottenham are leading Newcastle in the race to sign highly-rated RB Leipzig centre-back Mohamed Simakan this summer, according to Bild.
Spurs hit the jackpot when they signed Micky van de Ven from the Bundesliga last summer with the Dutch defender quickly becoming a pillar at the heart of the Lilywhites defence alongside World Cup winner Cristian Romero.
Simakan is seen as a man with a rising reputation in German football and is comfortable playing as a centre-back and also as a fullback when the need arises. The report in the Bild further adds that the 24-year-old is aware of interest from both Premier League giants but prefers a move to North London where he can play for the exciting Postecoglou.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will however have to pay his release clause which is reported to be £60million to bring him to the Premier League and strengthen Postecoglou’s squad for what will be an interesting second season in charge.
A direct replacement for Eric Dier who left for Bayern
Tottenham felt the full impact when Cristian Romero and Van de Ven were injured at various stages of the just-ended campaign. They signed Radu Dragusin who surprisingly turned down the chance to move to Bayern Munich to come to North London in the winter.
But they have not truly replaced the experienced Eric Dier who left the club in January and it is viewed that the signing of Simakan would be ideal for a team that will have added games due to qualifying for European football next season.
Tottenham began last season on fire winning eight of their first 10 games before they suffered their first defeat of the season against Chelsea and the wheels came off.
