‼️HUGE BLOW FOR TOTTENHAM ‼️
‘Unbelievable’ Tottenham player leaves the pitch ‘crying’ after suffering injury last night.
Tottenham Hotspur fans have some bad news coming their way as one of their players has suffered an injury.
Spurs supporters are really excited about the 2024/25 season and rightly so. Ange Postecoglou’s first campaign showed a lot of promise, and everyone believes his second one will be even better.
The biggest negative for Tottenham last season was the amount of injury issues they had. James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie all spent a while on the sidelines, while Manor Solomon barely played.
Spurs will be hoping that the upcoming campaign will be better on that front, but unfortunately for them, one of their players has already hurt himself while on international duty.
Postecoglou will not be happy with the news.
Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur leaves the pitch ‘crying’ after injury
Rodrigo Bentancur was one of Tottenham’s best players in his first year at the club.
Following his move from Juventus in January 2022, the Uruguayan became a regular in Spurs’ midfield and produced a number of incredible performances. Bentancur impressed his Tottenham teammates more than Dejan Kulusevski, even though the latter’s performances were far more exciting for the fans.
However, in February 2023, Bentancur suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out of action for eight months. Just a few games after his return, he hurt his ankle which sidelined him for almost four weeks.
The midfielder managed to remain fit for the rest of the season and was called up to the Uruguay national team by Marcelo Bielsa for Copa America 2024.
Bentancur, hailed as an ‘unbelievable player’ by Heung-min Son (Tottenham’s website), only got minutes as a substitute in each of Uruguay’s first four games in the competition, but late on Wednesday night, he was handed a start – in the semi-final against Colombia.
The Tottenham man started the game very well, but he suffered an injury in the first half.
While trying to take the ball from Jhon Arias, both Bentancur and his teammate Mathias Olivera slid in with a strong challenge. Unfortunately for them, they made more contact with each other than they did with the Colombia attacker.
Bentancur seemed to be in a lot of pain but he tried to run it off. However, at minute 33, he signalled to the bench that he could not continue.
The Spurs star was replaced and he could be seen leaving the pitch with tears.
Uruguayan media outlet El Observador wrote about Bentancur: “After 25 minutes he started running with difficulty. After 32 minutes he asked for the change, because it was noticeable that he couldn’t take it anymore.
“He left crying from the court after 33 minutes and his injury disorganised the team that minutes later suffered 1-0.”
What happened to Uruguay after Bentancur’s injury
Following Brazil’s elimination, Uruguay were among the favourites to win the Copa America along with Argentina. Bielsa’s presence made them serious contenders.
The former Leeds boss deployed Bentancur from the start, and his role was to lock down Colombia’s most important player, James Rodriguez.
The Tottenham star did that job brilliantly at the start of the game. He followed Rodriguez everywhere, and you could see how much that helped Uruguay.
However, after Bentancur got injured and left the pitch, Uruguay lost that defensive control in the middle of the park, and that cost them.
Jefferson Lerma scored the winner just five minutes after Bentancur’s substitution, and even though Colombia were down to 10 men for the whole of the second half, Uruguay could not break them down.
