Anthony Gordon vowed England “will be back” following their heartbreaking Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.
The Three Lions were outclassed in Sunday’s final by a side viewed by most as the best team throughout the tournament. Cole Palmer’s stunning equaliser gave England hope but Spain regained the advantage just four minutes from time, with Mikel Oyarzabal netting the winner.
Newcastle United winger Gordon watched on from the sidelines – as he had done for most of the competition. The 23-year-old played just four minutes in England’s 0-0 group-stage clash with Slovenia.
Despite pleas from supporters to enter the fray, Gordon was a passenger at Euro 2024. He had scooped Player of the Tournament at the under-21 edition last summer and an impressive season for Newcastle had many naming him in their starting line-ups.
However, the likelihood of him having an important role diminished as the Euros went on and, ultimately, he was a spare part in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad. Gordon now has 32 days before the Premier League opener against Southampton.
Newcastle have already begun pre-season preparations and face Hull City a week on Saturday before jetting off to Japan. That leaves the Toon ace with little time to recover ahead of another gruelling Premier League campaign.
Gordon promised to “recharge” for the new season, thanking the fans for their support while insisting England will return stronger. He posted on social media: “We will be back. Massive thank you to everyone who supported us, it didn’t go unnoticed. Time to recharge for the new season.”
