Nottingham Forest pulls off the heist of the summer: Snatches top target front Newcastle’s clutches at the last second

Nottingham Forest are close to signing a defender that has been long linked to Newcastle United.

According to reports gathered by Football Italia, Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic is set to undergo a medical at the City Ground today ahead of completing a £12million transfer.

As first reported by NewcastleWorld back in January 2022, Milenkovic was offered to Eddie Howe’s side while they chased Sven Botman of Lille and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos.

Neither player arrived that month, and the Magpies brought in Dan Burn as their defensive recruit. Botman eventually arrived six months later in a £35million deal. Carlos, meanwhile, joined Premier League counterparts Aston Villa.

Milenkovic has been linked with United since but the interest hasn’t been concrete. This summer, Eddie Howe’s side are in the market for a centre-back but the Serbian’s name is yet to pop up.

Indeed, it is another Serie A defender, AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw, that Newcastle are considering a move for.

That is despite the reported fee for Milenkovic being regarded as a bargain. The 26-year-old has made 264 appearances for Fiorentina and played in back-to-back Europa Conference League finals since joining from Partizan Belgrade in 2017.

At international level, Milenkovic started all three of Serbia’s Euro 2024 group games – including against England – and has 56 caps for his country.

Forest have made a busy start to this summer’s transfer window with Elliot Anderson among those to arrive for £35million. The Magpies reluctantly sold their academy graduate in order to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
