One positive from Maddison not playing for England this summer is that he is ready and starting pre-season from the get-go for Spurs.
Those who featured at this summer’s European Championships and Copa America probably won’t return to action until the final weeks of pre-season.
You feel Maddison has to use this to his advantage because, when he returned from injury last season, his form dropped and he struggled to get it back.
Another player who is set to have a huge season is Brennan Johnson, he opened the scoring against Hearts and got Tottenham‘s pre-season underway.
After the game, Maddison took to his Instagram story to comment on Johnson’s display with a simple message.

It was a healthy debut campaign from Johnson, but this is now his time to go to the next level at Spurs and under Postecoglou.
Some doubt whether Johnson will be a ‘top player’, but he just needs to simplify his team and make the right decisions in the final third and it will improve his game tenfold.
The Wales international scored five goals and supplied ten assists in his debut campaign in north London, which is pretty good going, especially when he was struggling with consistency at times.
There’s no doubt that he can hit double figures in goals and assists, especially when you are playing in such a free-flowing, all-out attacking and fearless system.
