Newcastle United used their recent trip to Adidas’ German headquarters to kickstart both their pre-season training and their new partnership with the legendary manufacturer but head coach Eddie Howe also used the jaunt as an opportunity to cast his eye over some prospective talent for the future.
The Magpies ran out 3-1 winners over German third division side SpVgg Unterhaching on Saturday, with goals coming via senior stars Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak. Howe used 22 different players in the behind closed doors clash, allowing the club’s youth stars their chance to impress in the second-half.
The second period saw new signing Odysseas Vlachodimos brought on in between the sticks, while youngsters Leo Shahar, Johnny Emmerson, Jay Turner-Cooke, Jamie Miley, Cathal Heffernan, Garang Kuol, Ben Parkinson, Ellis Stanton, Alfie Harrison and Trevan Sanusi were used outfield.
Newcastle failed to score in the second period and conceded their only goal of the game as Simon Skarlatidis scored from the penalty spot. Despite this, for many of the aforementioned youngsters this will have been a great test to prove their worth with Howe, new sporting director Paul Mitchell and other transfer spotters watching on.
