It’s understood that the English FA are keen to talk to Eddie Howe during their recruitment search for Gareth Southgate’s replacement.
And if that interest is followed up, Newcastle would then have a decision to make whether they allow Howe to discuss the England job. The Magpies could refuse given Howe is under contract and it would be then down to whether the Newcastle head coach pushes for permission to go ahead and talk about what is considered the dream job for many English bosses.
If contact from the FA is made with Newcastle – which is expected – that is when things could become tricky for Toon CEO Darren Eales. It would then be whether he sticks to his guns and retains Howe but risks upsetting the head coach or simply accepts his exit is on the cards and allows him to speak to the FA before beginning arrangements for compensation.
Former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has been in a similar position as Howe and while he was never as close to being offered the job, he knows the complexities of the situation surrounding the current Toon chief.
Pardew told Talksport: “A couple of times in my career it was mentioned to me. It is a really tricky one particularly if you are a manager in the Premier League because you have employers and you don’t want to upset them or unsettle them by putting your name forward.
“Although, privately you kind of say yeah you are interested or whatever. The media are all over it and reading between the lines and the words or putting words in.
“If you are an Englishman of course you’d be interested. Eddie has already made his comments this week and he’s more or less said he’s not interested but really I think he is.”
And Pardew would back Howe for the job because he feels he will tick all of the boxes to become the Three Lions gaffer ahead of the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League campaign and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Pardew added: “Where we are right now the most obvious candidate is Eddie Howe because he’s done a great job at Newcastle and done well in his managerial career.
“And he probably has a philosophy that will fit in terms of taking us somewhere different to Gareth. He is a little bit more assertive in his his style. Eddie ticks all the boxes.”
