Ange Postecoglou Reacts to Nottingham Forest Fans’ ‘Sacked in the Morning’ Chants

Ange Postecoglou has responded after Nottingham Forest supporters were heard singing “you’re getting sacked in the morning” at him during their 3-2 home defeat to Midtjylland in the Europa League on Thursday night. The former Tottenham boss replaced Nuno Espirito Santo less than a month ago, but he is already feeling the heat.

Crashing to a 3-0 loss to Arsenal in his first game in charge set a somber tone, one that is starting to sound like a broken record now that five more games have passed without the Tricky Trees picking up a win under their new manager. They led by two goals against Swansea City in the League Cup but lost 3-2, and squandered the same lead in a 2-2 draw against Real Betis exactly a week later during that run. Only the foolhardy board wanted Nuno Espirito Santo banished from the City Ground last month, with his achievement of taking Forest from relegation candidates to European football qualification for the first time in nearly three decades still meaning much to the supporters but very little to the higher-ups, after Evangelos Marinakis’ public disputes with him reached boiling point.

The decision to hand Nuno his P45 was already questionable, seemingly serving only Marinakis’ ego. But replacing a manager who offered stability and consistent results with one so unpredictable that, despite winning the Europa League with Tottenham last season, also oversaw their worst-ever Premier League finish in 17th, now seems even more bizarre.

This is made especially true as supporters are already calling for another change of guard. Reacting to those chants, Postecoglou said (watch the full interview below):

“Yeah, I heard them. They are fans, they want to see their team win, they are entitled to their opinion. [When asked if the chants surprised him] Nothing surprises me in football anymore.”

The worry for Postecoglou is that his fixture list doesn’t get any easier in the coming weeks. After calling on his team to “keep their heads up”, they must now focus on a trip to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle on Sunday afternoon. Then, after the international break, they face Chelsea, Porto, and high-flying Bournemouth in quick succession.
