Some interesting claims emerged from Sky Italy last night, who revealed that Newcastle United have ‘returned heavily’ for AC Milan centre-back Malick Thiaw.
Newcastle are long-term admirers of the German, as we revealed in an NUFCBlog exclusive last June, and it sounds like Paul Mitchell is also a big fan, with Sky’s Gianluca Di Marzio stating that Thiaw is ‘very much liked’ by our new Sporting Director.
Our search for a right-sided centre-back has been well-documented all summer and it looks like the club have reignited their interest in the Milan talent after missing out on Tosin Adarabioyo earlier in the window.
Di Marzio reports that we’ve ‘come back with force’ for the 22-year-old and are ‘very interested’ in bringing him to St James’ Park, although it’s understood that the Serie A side are yet to receive an official offer.
Interestingly, this comes after Mark Douglas at the i revealed that “positive” talks were held over the weekend between Howe and the club’s recruitment team as they sat down to discuss centre-back and right-winger targets.
Thiaw is the perfect age, would bring pace to our back line, has bags of potential to improve and is likely to cost in the region of £25-£35m, which should fall within our budget.
