The Independent reports that a central defender and defensive midfielder, plus as many as two wide forwards, are the positions Liverpool want to strengthen. Anthony Gordon’s name is in the report, alongside an acknowledgement that the Newcastle United player is still said to be keen on returning to the Reds.

These claims came hours after The Athletic reported that negotiations are taking place between the North East club and Crystal Palace over Marc Guehi. Liverpool have been linked with the England international this summer, with the report stating the defender is highly thought of by several of the biggest clubs in Europe.
Of those, Newcastle reputedly are the first to formalise that interest and engage in talks with Palace. The ECHO also reported earlier this week that the Reds agreed to a £45 million deal with the Magpies for Joe Gomez at the end of June.
The understanding is that there is still significant interest from Premier League clubs in the Liverpool defender, but Newcastle have since seemingly turned their attention to his international teammate. Both players remain on holiday after playing at the European Championship in Germany.
