Newcastle United are on the hunt for a new central defender and it appears the Magpies are heading in the right direction after positive talks over a deal for Crystal Palace and England star Marc Guehi.
News of Newcastle’s interest in the 24-year-old broke late last week and the player is keen on a move to St James’ Park. The only sticking points, at present, appear to be Palace’s hefty valuation and the fact other Premier League sides could hijack the move.
Before Guehi emerged as a Newcastle target, the focus, for many weeks, had been on AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw. Talks were first held over the 22-year-old back in June but, to date, there has still been no offer made from the English side.
As it stands, Milan want around £30-35m for the German international and Thiaw himself is content with staying at the San Siro. Manager Paulo Fonseca has been testing his new system for the upcoming season with the youngster very much central to his recent, and future, plans.

Should a deal be agreed, Milan would prefer that happen sooner rather than later to ensure they have time to find a replacement for Thiaw, despite the signing of Strahinja Pavlovic from RB Salzburg just last week. As such, an unofficial deadline has been imposed from the Italian side of negotiations.
There is also the possibility that Thiaw and Guehi have been used as a smokescreen for Newcastle interest that has been kept firmly in-house. With Liverpool said to be extremely keen on a move for the latter, it may be that Newcastle have to move on to other targets.
One thing is for sure, the fact Newcastle have been chasing two highly-rated assets at the back shows just how intent they are on securing another top centre-back for Howe’s ranks before the month is out.
It was widely assumed the biggest outlay of the window would be for a right-wing option but a deal for Guehi in particular would likely be the marquee move of the summer.
