Preseason has made it abundantly clear that West Ham need at least one centre-back before the window closes. His inability to stay fit and his overall lack of mobility has caused him to be outcast, with it looking likely that he won’t be a Hammer for much longer. As a result, the club have begun lining up potential additions with a number of names being thrown about. While it was rumoured that one of these players was Joe Gomez these claims have been completely shut down by Sean Whetstone.
He reports that Liverpool want £45 million for the defender, an unaffordable amount as the Hammers “have limited transfer funds remaining”.
Obviously, if that is the demand, the Irons should steer well clear. There is absolutely no world where Gomez is worth anywhere near that amount. He’s injury prone, a backup and, overall, just not good enough to justify that price tag. It’s likely now that the club will turn their attention to other targets, such as Tomori, Todibo, Solet and Logan Costa, all of which would prove better value for money than Gomez and, except perhaps Costa, there’s an argument that they’re all better players than him too
