ESPN pundit Steve Nicol has just delivered a pretty harsh verdict when discussing one Chelsea player and his future at Stamford Bridge.
There’s been a huge overhaul of the Chelsea squad under this ownership in the last two years, so there’s understandably been both success and failure.
If you’re looking for positives, Cole Palmer is the obvious standout after a remarkable debut season with the Blues last year. He’ll now be looking to back it up in the upcoming campaign under new head coach Enzo Maresca, who’s someone he does know from time together at Manchester City.
Unfortunately, there’s a number of individuals in the Chelsea ranks that haven’t lived up to expectation yet, whether that’s been through form or fitness.
Wesley Fofana, who’s played just 20 competitive games in his first two years as a Blues player, has received a piece of firm criticism in the media.
Steve Nicol strong with criticism on Wesley Fofana
Steve Nicol has ripped into Chelsea’s Fofana by suggesting he’ll never be a success for them.
Nicol told ESPN: “That backline scares me for fun. [Benoit] Badiashile and Fofana, I am sorry. I think they overpaid for Fofana – no question. I don’t think he has produced, and I am not so sure he will ever. And of course Reece James, you don’t know what’s going to happen with him. Is he going to last?”
As mentioned above, the £200,00-a-week defender (Spotrac) hasn’t been able to get any rhythm in his Chelsea career due to injury. In fact, he missed the whole of the 2023/24 campaign with a long-term problem.
The £70m centre-back (BBC) has been back with the first-team group this summer and playing in pre-season, so let’s hope he’s in for a much busier campaign.
Wesley Fofana can silence his doubters
If Fofana can sort his body out and get playing regularly for Chelsea, he’s got the individual ability to make his doubters look foolish over time. His immediate aim has to be being available for selection and nailing down a position in Maresca’s XI.
The 23-year-old Frenchman cost so much from Leicester a couple of years ago because he looked like the complete package in defence.
He’s got to prove that he’s still the same player after lengthy layouts. However, his game is perfect for the Premier League because it’s built on pace, power and aggression.
