Newcastle United could revisit a £45m move for Joe Gomez after the Liverpool defender was left out of their 2-0 win over Ipswich Town at the weekend. The Magpies remain in talks to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, but had shown an interest in the Reds defender earlier in the window.

According to the Liverpool ECHO, Arne Slot’s side are not looking to actively sell the player and will leave the decision to Gomez, despite his absence last weekend. The new Reds boss is said to be happy for him to fight his way back into contention this season.

Gomez had featured off the bench in Liverpool’s final pre-season warm up game, in the 4-1 win over Sevilla at Anfield, but it was Jarell Quansah who was given the nod to partner Virgil van Dijk at Portman Road. Ibrahima Konate was named on the bench.

Gomez, who is the longest-serving player in the current Liverpool squad, was linked with a move to St James’ Park as part of a deal that would have seen Anthony Gordon head to Anfield. However, a report from the Liverpool Echo claims Newcastle pulled the plug on the deal.

Since then, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Aston Villa and Fulham have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old England international, who is valued at around £45m. The Liverpool defender is said to be keen on exploring his options this summer.

If Newcastle are to reignite their interest in Gomez, it would be considerable cheaper than their current move for Guehi, freeing up funds to be invested elsewhere. The Magpies are still keen on a right-winger this summer, with a centre-back top of their priorities as things stand.
