The Magpies’ pursuit of a centre-back isn’t proving to be easy as Crystal Palace hold firm on their lofty valuation of Marc Guehi .Guehi could stay at Crystal Palace, and that means that Newcastle may need to look at alternatives.
Speaking on the London is Blue Podcast, Ben Jacobs has been discussing Trevoh Chalobah’s Chelsea future, and he says that Newcastle could well make a late move for Chalobah from out of nowhere if they can’t sign Guehi.Jacobs shared what he knows about the Chelsea defender.“Trevoh Chalobah is going to be picky. The Aston Villa interest is concrete. I’m not aware of Fulham coming back in. You have Newcastle if Guehi falls through. They could come from out of nowhere and bid for Chalobah, Manchester United have brought in De Ligt, so they’re unlikely to bid either,” Jacobs said.
Newcastle’s number one defensive target is Marc Guehi, and there would be an element of disappointment if Eddie Howe’s side had to turn towards Chalobah as an alternative. With all due respect, Chalobah and Guehi aren’t on the same level.
Guehi was arguably the best defender at the Euros for England. Meanwhile, Chalobah has never even had an international cap, and he’s barely spoken about as an option for England.
Simply put, Guehi is the much better option and if Newcastle do indeed want to push onto that next level, they need to pursue players of that calibre.
Of course, getting a deal like this over the line is much easier said than done, but Newcastle do need to show more ambition than going for a player like Chalobah.
It will be interesting to see what Newcastle do before the end of this summer, that’s for sure
