Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba has seemingly ended any talk of a potential departure from the Bundesliga Champions, after reported interest from Newcastle United.
Speaking to ESPN after Leverkusen’s win over Borussia Monchengladbach, Tapsoba was asked about links with a move to St James’ Park after Sky Sports and The Athletic reported that we’ve held talks with the German side.
However, the 25-year-old put to bed any idea of a transfer away from Xabi Alonso’s side, saying: “Yes (I’m staying), I’m fully focused on Leverkusen. This season we fight for everything, every title we win, and I’m fully focused on Leverkusen.”
David Ornstein reported last week that Tapsoba was one of several alternative options Newcastle were considering should they not be able to agree a deal with Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi.
Amongst the options listed by Ornstein was Chelsea’s Axel Disasi, while Craig Hope of the Daily Mail also linked Newcastle to another talented Bundesliga defender in RB Leipzig’s Mohamed Simakan.
With five days left until the transfer window shuts, Fabian Schar suspended for two more games and Sven Botman still injured, time is running out for us to sign a new centre-back games against Nottingham Forest and Spurs.
