Fabrizio Romano drops Newcastle transfer bombshell as deadline day approaches, talks are on.

Fabrizio Romano drops Newcastle transfer bombshell as deadline day approaches, talks are on.

The transfer window closes on Friday night, yet Newcastle United have still not made a major transfer breakthrough.

It has been an incredibly frustrating summer for Newcastle United, with a lack of transfer activity creating unrest among the fanbase.

With less than three days to go before the window closes, it does not look like Newcastle will sign a winger and a centre-back. That is a major disappointment, as they were the two priorities that needed to be addressed following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.

Not bringing in players for those two positions will be seen as a massive failure from the club, who continue to be held back by the Premier League’s financial rules.

Newcastle ‘closer’ to signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace

However, there could at least be one breakthrough on the horizon, with iNews providing a very positive update on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Marc Guehi.

According to iNews, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are ‘significantly closer’ to reaching an agreement for Marc Guehi to swap Selhurst Park for St James’ Park.

They report that terms could be finalised as early as Wednesday, with Newcastle now seemingly closing in on what looks set to be a club record transfer.

Palace have been looking to receive more than £65million for Guehi, while Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever is Alexander Isak at £63million.

Marc Guehi will be cup-tied if he signs for Newcastle

If Newcastle United do complete a deal for Marc Guehi then there is a chance he could already be ineligible for future Toon games.

That is because he started for Crystal Palace in their Carabao Cup win over Norwich City on Tuesday night. He will now be cup-tied if he signs for Newcastle – assuming the Magpies progress to the next round as they prepare to face Nottingham Forest tonight.

It will be a tough game against Premier League opposition for the Magpies, with Sandro Tonali predicted to start for Newcastle.

Still time left for Newcastle if they strike Guehi deal today

If Newcastle are able to reach an agreement to land Guehi today, it at least means there is a little bit of time left in the window to do a bit more business.

That would be extremely fanciful, but there will at least be a glimmer of hope going into Friday’s 11pm deadline.

While it will be great if we can get Guehi over the line, it is frustrating to see how long this deal has taken. Newcastle have not moved swiftly here, and are still scrambling for an agreement in the final few days of the window.

But that agreement could now be close, even if that is something we have heard before.
