the Daily Mail write that Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon has emerged as a candidate.
The 23-year-old is also admired by Liverpool, who were offered Gordon’s services ahead of the soft June 30 deadline for accounting purposes, in a proposed swap deal. The Reds turned that down but have continued to show interest in Gordon.
Arsenal themselves have been after Nico Williams of Athletic Club but no financially viable deal was possible. Now, it is claimed that they have turned to Gordon as a late option.
Although the England international is someone high on Edu’s list, he isn’t thought to be pining for a move. Arsenal are claimed to be weighing up an approach next summer already though, with Gordon identified as a future star.
Having been away with England at Euro 2024, where he was in action alongside Arsenal stars Ramsdale, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka, Gordon is a man in demand. The Magpies wish to tie him down to a new contract to reflect his form on the field – 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League last term – and to ward off potential suitors.
Gordon is described as being happy at St James’ Park with Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell determined not to lose his star player in his first summer. Eddie Howe is also keen to retain Gordon, and it leaves Arsenal fighting a late battle to make any headway.
For Artea this will come as an immediate blow but does not rule out a serious play in the coming months. It was a goalkeeper that emerged as a priority spot before deadline day though, and that appears to have been addressed.
Arsenal are not willing to have a passive end to the summer transfer window having seen much of their business to date drag on. Heading into Friday’s deadline day, Mikel Arteta had only seen two new arrivals – plus confirmation of David Raya’s loan becoming permanent.
