Newcastle identified Guehi as their top summer target, and even tabled a club-record proposal, but the Magpies ultimately failed to sign the Crystal Palace captain following a draining pursuit. Although Guehi was open to the move, the centre-back was not the type of character to hand in a transfer request.
Guehi has long recognised what Crystal Palace have done for him after giving the defender the platform to become not only a Premier League regular but an England international to boot. Now that the window has shut, Glasner is relieved his skipper is still on board – even if it was ‘never really in doubt’ in the Crystal Palace manager’s eyes.

“I’m very happy that Marc Guehi is still with us and Eberechi Eze,” he said. “We know that we have to keep our key players as well so it’s really great that the club and our owners decided to keep Marc. Marc didn’t push to leave us and Eb is the same.

“They had 10 days pre-season and, since then, they played every single minute in the games and that’s why Marc had cramp at the end. It’s his third game this week playing 100 minutes every game with no pre-season.
“It’s unbelievable how they perform. It’s unbelievable what they do because I was a player for 19 years and I know after 10 days, you’re far away from being fit but they do it with their passion and desire to help the team. It shows me from the first day that they are really pleased to be Crystal Palace players. This is what I really appreciate.”
