Eddie Howe has admitted to making tactical tweaks after Alexander Isak was starved of service during the 3-1 loss to Fulham.
The Sweden international had 26 touches against the Cottagers and did not manage a shot on target. Isak did not receive too many passes until after the break but Howe was still not satisfied and the striker’s record of one goal in six days is symptomatic of Newcastle’s indifferent start to the campaign.
Howe said: “He’s not as involved as we want him to be, he’s not having the impact in the games we want him to have and what he is capable of doing so hence the tactical reshuffle at half-time.”
Isak’s frustrations boiled over in the second half when Fabian Schar was handed the ball in gift-wrapped manner but failed to square it to his centre-forward and fired into the side netting when the best option was to square it. Newcastle boss Howe felt that the presence of Jacob Murphy, who set up Harvey Barnes, made a difference and said: “I thought we were better in the second half so there is a degree that the substitutions helped us at that stage, maybe not the latter ones where I thought our performance tailed off in the second period.”

“I thought Lewis Hall did really well and Jacob (Murphy) of course set up the goal. There was a much better feel about the group in the second half. Fabian’s (Schar) chance is probably a key moment in the match. It could have been different for us but it wasn’t to be.”
