AFC Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson joked people have “come out the woodwork” ahead of their clash against Newcastle United.
Tuesday night sees the Magpies take on the Wombles for the first time since the phoenix club’s inception in 2002. Newcastle lost to the team formerly known as Wimbledon 24 years ago – their last season in the Premier League.
Three divisions now separate the two clubs and Eddie Howe is looking to get back to winning ways following yesterday’s 3-1 defeat at Fulham. A raucous Plough Lane is expected, with 8,000 home supporters baying for another top-flight scalp after dumping Ipswich Town out in the previous round.
On paper, Newcastle are strong favourites as they aim to end the 70-year domestic trophy curse. But the Carabao Cup is prone to conjuring up shocks and Howe knows the competition could give him respite this season.

Demand for tickets is at an all-time high, with Wimbledon fans desperate to roar their team on against the Magpies. Wombles boss Jackson has been an in-demand man since the draw was made three weeks ago.
While recognising his team’s status as underdogs, the 42-year-old stressed they will not lie down easily – and vowed to “attack” their Premier League opponents. Jackson said after the 0-0 draw with Bradford City: “Quite a few people I haven’t heard from for a while have come out of the woodwork. I can’t wait.
“It’s exciting for me to go up against Eddie Howe, a Premier League manager, and Premier League opposition. But I’m more excited for my players to test themselves. We’re not there to just make up the numbers. We do want to attack the game.”
