Anthony Gordon finally sends message to Newcastle fans after penalty miss against Everton

Anthony Gordon had the chance to silence the Everton fans that berate him on Saturday night, but the Newcastle United forward squandered it.
After a shirt pull on Sandro Tonali, Newcastle United were given a penalty in the 35th minute against Everton. It was the chance to take the lead, and the responsibility was given to Anthony Gordon.
The 23-year-old had been booed all game, as he returned to Goodison Park for the third time since his £40million transfer from Everton to Newcastle United.
It was a massive moment for Gordon, and he fluffed it. After a lengthy delay, his penalty was saved by Jordan Pickford. In truth, it was a pretty poor spot kick, but the Everton faithful celebrated as if their team had scored.
Pickford guessed the right way to deny Gordon, as Newcastle and Everton went on to play out a 0-0 draw. The Magpies had plenty of other openings after the missed penalty, but none better than Gordon’s chance from 12 yards.

Anthony Gordon takes the blame for Newcastle’s draw with Everton
It was a pivotal miss, and it resulted in Newcastle and Everton sharing the points.
The result means Newcastle head into the international break with 12 points, which leaves them seventh in the Premier League table. As for Everton, they are 16th with five points from seven games.
Had Newcastle won, they would be level on points with Aston Villa and Chelsea. And you could argue they probably would have won if Gordon had scored his penalty.
Alas, his effort was saved, and Gordon has reacted to the miss on his official Instagram account.
Alongside some pictures from the game, he wrote: “A great performance, just couldn’t put them away, and that’s on me. Never easy missing but you’ll never ever see me shy away from stepping up for my team. Thanks to everyone that travelled – till next time.”
Newcastle’s number 10 received plenty of support on social media from his teammates, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento and Joe Willock all commenting.
Newcastle missing their regular penalty taker
In the aftermath, there has been plenty of chat that Gordon should not have taken the penalty given the situation.
However, he was never going to shy away. Gordon scored a penalty just one week earlier in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City, and will have been confident that he could do the same – even if it was against his England colleague Jordan Pickford.
The alternative to Gordon would have been Fabian Schar, who also recently scored a penalty for the Magpies. He converted from 12 yards last Tuesday night as Newcastle beat Wimbledon 1-0 in the Carabao Cup.
But Newcastle were without their two main penalty takers at Goodison Park. Alexander Isak is first choice, and after that you would assume it is Callum Wilson. However, they both missed the draw with Everton due to injury.
The hope is that Isak and Wilson will be back for Newcastle against Brighton on October 19th, which is the Magpies’ first game after the international break.
