Newcastle United ‘pushing’ to get stunning free transfer over the line that would stun Premier League rivals

A two-time Premier League winner could be on his way to St. James’ Park next summer.

Newcastle United are expected to pursue the signing of a former Premier League winner from one of Europe’s top clubs, according to reports.

The Magpies have started their Premier League campaign in fine form. Eddie Howe’s side sit seventh in the league with their most recent outing finishing in a 0-0 draw against Everton at Goodison Park.

Despite their positive start, question marks remain over the depth of the squad. Last term, they were ravaged by injuries combined with more games – due to Champions League commitments.

Former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane, 28, has emerged as a candidate to join the Magpies. The German’s contract is set to expire this summer. He has fallen out of favour under new boss Vincent Kompany.

Sane has featured just twice in the Bundesliga this term, with his manager opting for Serge Gnabry from the start.

Ex-Sunderland, Spurs and City scout Ian Brown has reportedly told Football Insider that Newcastle are looking to explore the free-agent market and ‘pushing’ for a move.

It is thought Sane will be free to talk to other clubs in January as he will enter the final six months of his deal in Bavaria.

In June 2024, it was reported that Sane would start contract discussions after the Euros. However, this does not seem to have materialised as of yet.

If he were to join Newcastle, Howe could be in for a selection headache. Both Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes prefer playing on the left flank, despite being right-footed.

Of course, Sane will back himself to earn a starting spot at St. James’ Park, given his pedigree in the Premier League.

The deal could be made possible by the Magpies’ new sporting director, Paul Mitchell. Noises coming out of the Northeast suggest Howe and Mitchell do not see eye to eye. But the I reported that ‘clear-the-air’ talks took place in late September.

The German played an integral part in Man City’s 2017-18 and 2018-19 campaigns.
