Ange Postecoglou stares down Tottenham fan as tempers boil over after Ipswich loss.
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou took exception to one fan’s criticism after their shock 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town on Sunday.
Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou was involved in a tense encounter with a fan after they targeted him in the wake of their 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town on Sunday.
Moments after the final whistle, a supporter in the home section of the crowd made their feelings clear over the result and it’s fair to say Postecoglou didn’t like what he heard.
Video footage uploaded on social media showed the Australian coach walking towards the tunnel when he suddenly halted and peered his head up towards a spectator in the stands.
Postecoglou, along with a member of his backroom staff, proceeded to stare down the person in question for several seconds before continuing on his way towards the dressing room.
It’s not clear from the audio what the fan allegedly said to Postecoglou to get him riled up. But the 59-year-old looked utterly unamused after witnessing another disappointing display from his team.
Spurs fans had booed the team at the final whistle after their shock defeat at the hands of Kieran McKenna’s side, who hadn’t previously won a game since their promotion to the top flight.
But a 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray in the Europa League on Thursday had put a dampener on their recent surge before they went down to Ipswich, who celebrated ending their 10-game wait for a victory.
Sam Szmodics put the Tractor Boys in front with an improvised overhead kick in the first half before Liam Delap fortuitously doubled their advantage.
Dominic Solanke had a goal disallowed for handball in the build-up before Rodrigo Bentancur’s header ensured a grandstand finish. But Spurs were unable to find an equaliser, condemning them to a fifth defeat in 11 games this season in the league.
Postecoglou didn’t mince his words as he accepted responsibility for their recent dip in form, admitting he was struggling to extract the best level from his players.
“It’s just down to me. I’m not getting consistent performances from the players,” he said. “It’s something I need to address. I’m the person in charge so that’s usually the way it goes. I take responsibility when their performances don’t meet the levels that they should.”
Asked if it was a new feeling, he added: “No, I think it’s been our season so far. It’s been really inconsistent.”
Spurs find themselves down in 10th position in the Premier League table, although there is only three points separating them and London rivals Chelsea, who rose to third with a 1-1 draw against Arsenal.
